A Message From Gary

I wanted to clarify the discussion of the Confederate Flag in our recent CNN interview. Myself, the past members and the present members (that are from the South), are all extremely proud of our heritage and being from the South. We know what the Dixie flag represents and its heritage; the Civil War was fought over States rights.
We still utilize the Confederate (Rebel) flag on stage every night in our shows, we are and always will be a Southern American Rock band, first and foremost. We also utilize the state flag of Alabama and the American flag as well, ‘cause at the end of the day, we are all Americans. I only stated my opinion that the confederate flag, at times, was unfairly being used as a symbol by various hate groups, which is something that we don’t support the flag being used for. The Confederate flag means something more to us, Heritage not Hate…

-Gary Rossington

not being from the US, I don`t understand why people carry on about the Stars and Bars, it`s part of your heritage, good or bad you can`t change it, in Australia we have the Koori flag, for the original Australians, the Eureka flag, which was the war flag for the Eureka rebellion and they mean different things to different people, we are proud of them as we are of our national flag. Be proud of where you come from.

@imkimssister: No, Peaches you understand it perfectly. The rebel flag will be on stage as always, It's just the back drop, behind the drummer that their talking about. Alot of people have not gotten into Skynyrd because of a flag that they do not under stand, which is sad. don't forget the swastiki(?) Nazi flag, was a sign of peace, before Hitler hijacked it. Much like the KKK and other skin heads that stoled the symbol of the south, shows the mentality of hate groups, they can't think up their own symbol, so just steal someone elses. People here know that I love Skynyrd (old and new), some still asked if they are rascists,so, although I don't like the idea of dropping the rebel back drop, I do understand why. It has not change my feelings for this legendary band they have been and always will be the ultimate band for me and thousands of others. Thank you.

I did not hear the CNN interview and hell for that matter I don't need to hear it when it comes to our country's many flags. I have been to so many Skynyrd shows in my life and I aint never been to one that did not fly a few flags, even brought a few of my own rebel flags to fly at the shows, those flage are a symbol of our proud heritage!! Brother, you don't owe anyone a damn explanation about flying rebel, Alabama state or American flags at a Skynyrd show!!
Rock On My Friend!!
See Ya in Orlando later this month!!

Important to understand the Confederate flag used by more than 40 years by the band Lynyrd Skynyrd, as well as on top General Lee (Dodge Charge 69 series "The Dukes of Hazzard"). They did not wear a flag on the car as condoning the KKK, but as a symbol of rebellion. Johnny Cash as saying in the music homenagen The General Lee "The pride of the South they call the General Lee"

God Bless you Gary Rossington,
I remember when am radio only played Skynyrd and we were all so damn proud that we had a voice in music we could all identify with.If you were'nt there at that time you'll never identify with the pride we had to see the battle flag behind good music that meant something to an entire generation. All of us had relatives that died for that flag and I'll be damned if I'll set by and hear some kid who's been shamed into being who they are and wanting to get acceptance for being something or someone they're not tell me it's a flag of treason. If that's the case the U.S flag is a flag of treason, ask England. We all have the right to dissagree or agree, thats the beauty of our homeland.
It's not our fault that people have used the battle flag as a symbol of hate, just like its not U.S citizens fault that others have used the U.S. flag as a symbol of hate and tyranny. It's really funny that those who preach the loudest about acceptance and tolerance are the first to use us as a sacrificial lamb.
I'm proud of my heritage and will be 'till the day I die.Just like I felt Ronnie, Gary,Allen,Leon,Billy,Artimus,Ed,Steve and everyone else were in some way my family because they sang about everything we did.I went to concerts listening to music about my life and the things that made me feel like I belonged to something in a time where it was hard to wear your hair long, much less talk bad about people and for an opinion about something you had no idea of what you were talking about. The flag to us is heritage, not hate. The flag to us is home and a way of life,be it good or bad or indifferent. The flag to us is pride, not predudice and I dont give a damn what anybody says,I'll argue that fact.God Bless you Gary and keep on truckin.

okay, I'm confused. Maybe someone can help clear things up. I am reading different post about LS is 'NOW' flying the confederate flag again?? Its made to sound as if Gary had changed his mind and the fans 'won'?? It was my understanding that they NEVER stopped having it 'in' and a part of, their show. Even Gary stated that it will continue to be part of the show. And usually when they sing 'sweet home Alabama', Johnny has it hanging from the mic. so they didn't 'go back' on what they decided...the flag remains 'in' the show just as it has been and Gary said it will remain. Its the back drop that they've decided to stop.

Georgia peach here so don't have to say which side of the fence I'm on. LOL.
But was confused by what some people are saying. thanks much!

I agree in gender and number with Gary Rossington degree, the Confederate flag is a trademark of banda period. In Importantly opportunity'm anxious for the return of LS, Brazil.
