It was 1990 or '91. My son was about 5 and it was the fourth of July. LS had come to Roanoke , Virginia to do an outdoor concert. The night before, I took my wife and son out to Texas Steakhouse, a local place, for dinner. We were seated next to a group of about 5 or 6 guys having a beer or twelve and enjoying themselves. After studying the group, I recognized JVZ at the head of the table (turns out the other guys were members of the road crew). My son, even at that age, was a fan of Skynyrd. I leaned over to him and whispered who it was at the table next to us. He could hardly control his excitement, and asked me if he could get some autographs. I told him to wait until they had finished their steaks, so he reluctantly did.
I gave him a pen and a cloth napkin (all I had) and sent him over. He walked up to one of the road crew, and timidly asked them if they were Lynyrd Skynyrd. One of the guys smiled at him, and said that JVZ was the only band member, and pointed him to him.
My son walked up and said "Mr. Skynyrd, can I have your autograph?" JVZ laughed, and graciously signed the napkin. When my son got back to the table, our waitress asked us "Are those guys famous?" !!!!! I told her who they were, and all hell broke loose. Every wait person and a bunch of patrons swarmed the table. As we left, I looked over to JVZ and said "Sorry we blew your cover!!" . He just smiled and waved.
The next day, as a holiday, I took my son to the local golf course. He liked to be my "caddie". As we approached the first tee, I recognized some of the guys from the night before in the group ahead of us. They saw my son, and shouted "Hey, we know you from dinner!!" . They were accustomed to the attention they had received the night before, and we all had a good laugh.
That restaurant has closed, but the last time I was there, they had a photo and autographs still hanging on the wall.
My son still has his autographed napkin nicely framed.
Last night my wife surprised me with tickets to see Skynyrd and Bad Company at Bethel Woods (NY) on July 27th for my birthday. Lawn seats were all we could afford, but its gonna be one more thing I can check off my Bucket List - finally seeing my all time favorite performers!!!!
