I'm a diehard Skynyrd fan since the 70's, and I like the new CD a lot. Even though Gary's the only original left, in some ways this sounds more like "original" Skynyrd than anything post-crash. The hard-rocking, guitar-based blues are finally back in the music and I'm thrilled about that. So I am NOT one to bash the current band.

That being said, I'm sorry, I have to agree with the original post from MommaLyd, at least to some extent. The original band might have touched on some political issues, but did so in a subtle way. The current band hits you over the head with a sledgehammer with their views. Even more than the political commentary, I'm a little tired of going to the Church of Van Zant with the last 2 CD's. I get it, you have your religious beliefs, and I respect that. But the sermonizing going on in songs like "Start Living Life Again" is getting really annoying. And throwing the line "She knows that Jesus is the only one that saves me" in "Homegrown"? That line has nothing to do with the rest of the song whatsoever. Again, the original band might have referred to the Lord a few times, but I don't listen to Lynyrd Skynyrd as a replacement for going to church. Please, guys, tone it down.

Those on the "left" have no trouble flooding the airwaves with their crap like "Born this Way" etc... We're all supposed to like it because that is seemingly the flavor of the day in our society. Those on the "left" would say, "if you dont like it dont listen to it." Well if a person doesnt like "right" stuff, dont listen to it. It is refreshing to hear a band that stands for what they believes without caving to society.

I also agree with the thought that people should not come here to complain and whine. I dont go to the Duran Duran board (if there is one) and talk about how much I hate their music and lyrics. I simply avoid the things I dont like and focus on what I do like, i.e. Lynyrd Skynyrd and their music.

Sorry for the previous empty response, accidentally hit the Respond button before writing my response.

My point has nothing to do with being left or right or whatever. I had no problem with the subtle political messages in some of the original band's material. I just thing batting people over the head with your views isn't really productive. RVZ had a way with lyrics where he could make his point in a subtle way and even if you didn't agree with it, you didn't mind or feel you were being talked down to. I 100% agree it's great that they stand up for what they believe in, but don't bludgeon us with it. A bit of the current material is so in-your-face that it sometimes does get in the way of the music. Sure, they have a right to speak their views, but I don't think any of us should be looking to Lynyrd Skynyrd or any other entertainers to give us political advise.

As for the thought that people shouldn't come here to complain and whine. Um, I'm not complaining or whining. I'm expressing a view. Trust me, I have applauded and defended this band for many years in many places. I am a far bigger supporter of the "new" Skynyrd than most. I am far from a habitual complainer. I don't think posting a viewpoint on the lyrical direction of the band makes me a whiner, and I sure as hell didn't say I hated Skynyrd's music or lyrics. They are my favorite band of all time by far. So please don't equate me with someone bitching about something I don't care about (your Duran Duran example). They are my favorite band, and I respect the hell out of Gary for what he's done to continue the band. But if all this board was about was how wonderful Skynyrd was and everything they do is perfect, this would be a mighty dull board.

@WildHorsesOnThePlanes: I was not directing anything at you specifically, just read all the posts on the thread and threw in my two cents. I dont know if you are doing this, but it bothers me personally that people have a problem with the "religious" nature of songs, but those songs that espouse an anti God agenda are considered just fine because that is the artist's right. I am speaking of music on the whole, not just Skynyrd. I am a Christian and I realize that not all share my thoughts on this matter.

The sermonizing (religious or irreligious) and or poltical nature of an album has been around for a long time now and certainly was the driving force behind the 60's. Pink Floyd, "The Wall" and many other come to mind. I guess what I am saying is that this is not new in music and Skynyrd is adding their voice and their belief to the mix. The past two albums have clearly ramped up the political and religious aspects of their songwriting. Like everybody else in the music industry, they will produce the music they choose to produce and we will all decide to buy and listen or not.

Peace

@My Own Sunrise: I am behind you and Ronnieband if your going to whine and stir shit up just leave.I don't think any musicians should get to public with politics. It seem's like it's always been about 50% REP.and 50% Dems. The people who really get in to politics will turn their back on you.So I just stick to the music and politicians do their thing.I have heard of a few musicians hurt their careers by publicly voices their believes but have no examples that it has helped a career.Just my opinion GO SKYNYRD.
