A Message From Gary
I wanted to clarify the discussion of the Confederate Flag in our recent CNN interview. Myself, the past members and the present members (that are from the South), are all extremely proud of our heritage and being from the South. We know what the Dixie flag represents and its heritage; the Civil War was fought over States rights.
We still utilize the Confederate (Rebel) flag on stage every night in our shows, we are and always will be a Southern American Rock band, first and foremost. We also utilize the state flag of Alabama and the American flag as well, ‘cause at the end of the day, we are all Americans. I only stated my opinion that the confederate flag, at times, was unfairly being used as a symbol by various hate groups, which is something that we don’t support the flag being used for. The Confederate flag means something more to us, Heritage not Hate…

The Rebel Flag is just a Symbol!!!
Me, as a brazilian fan, have to much problens to explain why I take a "racist symbol " stamped on my shirt. People here just cant understand what the rebel flag really means!

In the 70s the rebel flag thing just seemed like a statement of personal rebellion to me. I was sent home in the fifth grade for wearing on a tshirt in Atlanta, and couldn't understand why. I can't say there wasn't racism at my high school in South Florida, but we were bussed together,so it was tight quarters. Music and dope kept the peace really. Anyway, Skynyrd was one top notch band we loved. On another weekend you might see Yes or Alice Cooper. Rock wasn't so divided then. Nobody that I knew really identified with the rebel flag, it was just a fashion thing like the union jack. Not that there weren't stone rednecks around, but you just gave those people a wide berth. Anyway,it's the music that counts. Keep rockin Gary

Thank you for clarifying your statement, I believe southern rock bands should be
proud of their heritage and speak up against those who would misuse the Confederate flag.

The Confederate Flag is a part of our country's history. The sacrifices made by both sides are a big part of what made this country great! Why try to hide it? I'm glad that you stood up to CNN and told them "what it is". Rock on Gary and the rest of the members of Lynyrd Skynyrd Band !!!
P.S. - I just saw you guys at DTE in Clarkston, MI and you were truly at your best tonight! I'll see you in a month on the Simple Man Cruise!

I completely agree. People shouldn't be offended by the Confederate flag. It just represents the South and not any kind of hate.

@kaybro2011: People like you, your husband, and everyone else complaining about this make me sick to my stomach. Listen Lynyrd Skynyrd is not about the flag! It’s about the music!! Everyone just wants to come on here and bitch about this. If you guys do not like what Skynyrd is doing and the great music they are making, THEN PLEASE go and listen to one direction, lady gaga, and Justin Bieber! You want to talk about how you have been fans for over 30 years? Then why would you abandon them for saying they want to use the American Flag and not the rebel flag? That’s so retarded and annoying! Get a life and grow up fair-weather fans! -Skynyrd Nation!

Gary, you need to be as loyal to the fans that love the flag and has supported lynyrd skynyrd for 30 years.Because without the fans there would be no lynyrd skynyrd.my husband and myself has went to over 30 lynyrd skynyrd concerts over the years, but we will no longer support skynyrd because you don't want to offend anyone by suporting the confederate flag.you have offended us by not using it anymore.
