1976/1977 Tour Dates
February 22, 2011 7:19:24 PM UTC Post #1

Hello, all.

This is my first post to the Lynyrd Skynyrd boards.

I am helping a friend to compile a listing of the band's previous concerts between the years 1973 and 1977. While there are lots of web sites that list city and state information, most of them don't list the actual venues for the older concerts.

So, if any of the long-time fans here at the boards, by chance, attended one of the shows below and can provide venue information, I'd certainly appreciate it.

Thanks for taking the time to look at this very long list and thanks, in advance, for your help.

Keep on rocking!

Hubie

Hey there Hubie,

While I can't provide any information for venues for the dates and locations that you have listed above, I DO KNOW of a Lynyrd Skynyrd performance which took place during your time period of 1976 -1977 that you do not have listed here.

Just prior to the Myrtle Beach SC. show - the show where Steve Gaines joined as a permanent member of the band - Lynyrd Skynyrd played a final date without him the very day before, also during that Memorial Day weekend, which took place at RFK Stadium in Washington DC. on Sunday, May 30, 1976.

The line-up that day in order of appearance was Ted Nugent, Nazareth, Lynyrd Skynyrd and Aerosmith.

Interestingly enough, Skynyrd used the very same pseudo Mount Rushmore themed stage with the rebel flag backdrop at RFK Stadium that day I saw them in 1976 which many will remember them also using the following year on July 4, 1977 at Oakland when 'Free Bird' was filmed and later included in their movie and now seen all over YouTube. Remember, 1976 was the bicentennial year.

Here is a link to that Oakland performance which includes limited views of that Rushmore stage.

See you all next Friday night in Hollywood Florida!!

Hello Hubie,

I noticed upon further examination that you don't have ANY of the DC area Lynyrd Skynyrd tour dates listed above for the 1976 - 1977 years. Perhaps they aren't listed because you already know about them and the venues, but I figure you might want to go and consult better sources for LS tour info because if you are missing Washington DC area dates, you are likely also missing a whole lot more as well.

So, in the spirit of completion and totality, let me also fill you in on two other Skynyrd DC area tour stops not chronicled above. One date Skynyrd played, while the other was cancelled because it was to take place AFTER the plane crash happened.

First, the DC area date that DID occur was October 20, 1976 - exactly one year prior to the crash - when LS played the old Capital Centre in Landover/Largo (your choice) Maryland.

Additionally, Skynyrd also was scheduled to play the same venue December 8, 1977 during the Street Survivors Tour but we all know why they did not make that show.

Interestingly, Lynyrd Skynyd was one of the first bands to play the Cap Centre after it first opened for events back in December 1973. They performed there Thursday December 6, 1973 with The Who during their Quadrophinia Tour.

Good Luck

I saw the April 30 1977 show when I was 14. It was the best concert I have ever seen. I believe they played with Tower of Power and The Outlaws but it was so long ago (and I was quite stoned) I'm not sure anymore.

Hubie:
The concert in 1976 in Seattle would have been at what was called The Seattle Center Coliseum. It was later partly torn down and rebuilt, now known as Key Arena. It's on the grounds of what was the 62' worlds fair; right next to the space needle.

I am also trying find a date for a concert in 1977. My memory is getting foggy I guess but I am sure that I went to see LS in Seattle somtime in 1977. I know it wasn't 1976, b/c I went to only one concert in 76' and LS wasn't it. But I can't seem to find anything on the net showing a seattle date for 1977! The reason I know it wasn't 76' is because the very first concert I went to was Jethro Tull in 76' and that was the only one I went to that year. I wonder if LS added on a second seattle date that year? If anyone could help me it would be great. I do know that when I did see LS the opening act was Journey.

how about when they played JFK stadium inPhiladelphia?? I think it was summer of 76 and for a while I thought 77 but the show doesn't show up on their tour schedule for street survivors that year??? I need to find the ticket stub stached away some where. They were the second act, Jay Gylles opened with monkey Island and Peter Frampton was the main liner but not everyone stayed around for that???

@SkynyrdSlate: I went to that RFK show in DC. If my memory serves correctly, Ed King had quit and they played with only two guitars - Rossington and Collins.

It was an awesome show though. It was a cloudy/rainy day. Not bad enough to hurt anything, but the weather wasn't great. Everybody else (Nugent, Nazareth, Aerosmith) all drove out to the stage in limos. LS drove out in a beat up Volkswagon bus.

When they were done, they all climbed back in the bus to leave, but after a few minutes, the door opened and Ronnie Van Zandt came out. The whole house went nuts. He took a long pull off his Jim Beam and motioned for the others to follow him. Billy Powell started playing the intro to Freebird and as God as my witness, the sun started peeking through the clouds with seagulls buzzing the stadium. Allen Collins slayed that solo hanging ten at the front of the stage and never missed a note.

Also saw them at the Capitol Center with Steve Gaines. When Steve played his slide stuff on T for Texas, the big 4 sided monitor at the center of the venue had a shot looking down Steve's Les Paul with Ronnie Van Zandt watching him in the background. Ronnie just shook his head as he played - totally blown away by his playing. It was epic.

I saw LS last night and they practically played that Capital Center show. Every show I saw them before the accident, they started with "Working for the MCA" - last night was no exception. In the indoor shows, they had that huge disco ball during Freebird. Again, last night was no exception. Rickey Medlocke and Sparky do their original members justice - the 3 guitar army is different, but more than able.

the only thing I truly miss when comparing the new lineup versus the old, is Allen Collin's version of Crossroads. He played it at that Capital Center show and he ripped it. Other than that, they are really playing the same tunes at almost the same quality here and now.
